HALLOWELL Family

First Generation

1. John1 Hallowell was born about 1625.

He married Marriott, Elizabeth in Teversall, Nottinghamshire, England, 24 JUN 1647.

Hallowell, John1 and Marriott, Elizabeth [from Marsfield, England] had the following child:

+i. John2 Hallowell was born about 1648.

Second Generation

John2 Hallowell (John1) was born in Hucknell, Nottinghamshire, England about 1648. John2 died 27 DEC 1706 in Abington, PA.

He married (1) in 1672, SARAH, daughter of FRANCIS CLAY. She and their son JOHN, born 8 December 1672, both died in England.

He married (2) Holland, Mary in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England, 27 OCT 1675. Mary was born in Millnehay, Derbeyshire, England about 1650/55. She was the daughter of Holland, Thomas and Mary. Mary died bef 1682 in England.

JOHN HALLOWELL the founder of the family of that name in Pennsylvania, came to Darby, PA, in 1682, with his wife MARY and their children, SARAH, THOMAS and MARY. He brought a certificate from [Quaker] Friends Meeting at Hucknow, in the Parish of Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England, dated 12 mo. 19. 1682-83. He settled for a time near Darby, where six other children were born, JOHN, ELIZABETH, HANNAH, SAMUEL, BENJAMIN and JANE. In 1696 he bought a tract of 630 acres in Abington Township, west of Willow Grove. He took up his residence near Weldon, where the remainder of his life was spent.

Hallowell, John2 and Holland, Mary had the following children:

i. Sarah, F (1676-)
ii. Thomas3 Hallowell was born 6 JAN 1679, d. 1734
iii. Mary, F (1681-1727)

In 1682, JOHN2 HALLOWELL emigrated from Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England to Darby, PA, with his children, SARAH, THOMAS and MARY.

JOHN2 HALLOWELL the founder of the family of that name in Pennsylvania brought a certificate from Friends Meeting at Hucknow, in the Parish of Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England, dated 19 December 1682/83.

About 19 DEC 1682 when John was 34, he married (3) Mary SHARPE, [daughter of Thomas SHARPE] Born in England. Mary died on 11 Jan 1701/1702 in PA.

They had the following children:

i. John, M (1685-)
ii. Elizabeth, F (1687-)
iii. Hannah, F (1689-)
iv. Samuel, M (1692-)
v. Benjamin, M (1694-1758)
vi. Jane, F (1697-)

He settled for a time near Darby, PA where six other children were born: JOHN, ELIZABETH, HANNAH, SAMUEL, BENJAMIN and JANE.

In 1696 he bought a tract of 630 acres in Abington Township, west of Willow Grove. He took up his residence near Weldon, where the remainder of his life was spent.

Third Generation

Thomas3 Hallowell (John2, John1) was born in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, England 6 JAN 1679. Thomas died 14 DEC 1734 in Abington, PA, at 55 years of age.

He married Till, Rosamond at Darby meeting, 12 JAN 1702. Rosamond was born in Green Whitgreave, parish of St. Mary, Staffordshire, England 18 FEB 1678. She was the daughter of Till John and Jackson Mary. Rosamond died 13 JUN 1745 in Abington, PA, at 67 years of age.

Hallowell, Thomas and Till, Rosamond had the following child:

i. William4 Hallowell was born 1 JUN 1707.

Fourth Generation

William4 Hallowell (Thomas3, John2, John1) was born 1 JUN 1707 in Abington, Montgomery Co., PA. William died in Abington, Montgomery Co., PA 23 AUG 1794 at 87 years of age.

He married TYSON, Margrett in Abington, PA, 23 AUG 1729. Margrett was born 7 DEC 1708. She was the daughter of Tyson Matthias and Potts Mary. Margrett died 4 APR 1752 in Abington, PA, at 43 years of age.

Hallowell, William and Tyson, Margrett had the following child:

i. Joshua5 Hallowell was born 15 APR 1751.

Fifth Generation

Joshua5 Hallowell (William4, Thomas3, John2, John1) was born in Abington, PA 15 APR 1751. Joshua died 15 AUG 1835 in Phila. Co., PA, at 84 years of age.

He married Trump, Hannah in Horsham meeting, 19 NOV 1773. Hannah was born about 1753. She was the daughter of Trump, Michael and Nanney, Grace [SEE: Rhys Nanney for continuation of this line].

Hallowell, Joshua and Trump, Hannah had the following child:

i. Joseph6 Hallowell was born 1785.

Joshua Hallowell son of William was born in Abington, 1751 and died in Phila County 1835; married at Horsham Meeting 1873 Hannah Trump, daughter of Michael and Grace (Nanney) Trump. On 14 MAR 1780 William Hallowell Sr. and Agnes his wife conveyed to Joshua Hallowell 83 acres and 89 perches of land in Abington Twp. This tract was conveyed by Joshua Hallowell and his wife in 1784 to his brother William Hallowell, Jr. Joshua was a farmer and a miller.

Sixth Generation

Joseph6 Hallowell (Joshua5, William4, Thomas3, John2, John1) was born in New London Twp., Chestor Co., PA 1785. Joseph died 1872 in Phila., Phila. Co., PA.

He married Evans, Martha in Chestor Co., PA, 1807. Martha was born 1785. She was the daughter of Evans, William. Martha died 1826.

Hallowell, Joseph and Evans, Martha had the following child:

i. William Evans HALLOWELL b: 1808 in Chester, PA
ii. Hannah Matilda HALLOWELL b: 21 JUN 1811 in PA
iii. Alexander Henry HALLOWELL b: 1813

Joseph Hallowell's father was Joshua, born in New London Twp., Chester County, PA 1785; died at Phila, 1872; married 1st. 1807 at Chester, PA, Martha Evans, born 1785, died 1826, d/o William Evans, of Delaware County, PA; married 2nd. 1827 Rebecca Stump daughter of Daniel and Mary Speece Stump. In 1813 Joseph Hallowell purchased a tract of 20 acres of land on the Kensington and Rising Sun Turnpike and Martin's Mill Road (now Lawndale), where he resided most of his life. He was a farmer, but also engaged in the lumber business in Frankford, and had a saw mill in Brideshead. Children: William Evans, Hannah Matilda, George Washington, Alexander Henry, John Thomson, Rifford Randolph, James Bayard, Martha Jane and Joseph Smith by first wife and by second Daniel Stump, Mary Ann, Margaret Perkins, Manning Carl, Jesse Franklin, Anna Rebecca, Jesse Trump, John Seddons and Sara Louisa.

Seventh Generation

Rifford Randolph7 Hallowell (Joseph6, Joshua5, William4, Thomas3, John2, John1) was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Penn. 1816. Rifford died 1864.

He married Meirio, Amanda in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Penn., 7 JUN 1838. Amanda was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Penn. about 1821.

Hallowell, Rifford Randolph and Meirio, Amanda had the following children:

i. Henry B. b. abt 1834
ii. Joseph M. b. abt 1837
iii. Louisa M. b. abt 1839
+iv. Amanda M8 Hallowell was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA 18 APR 1842. Amanda died 13 SEP 1873 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, at 31 years of age. She married Pierce, Marcus Morton in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, about 1865. Marcus was born in Woonsocket, Providence Co., RI 19 SEP 1842. He was the son of Pierce, James L. and Brayman, Elvira. He married (2) Nary, Anna after 1874. Marcus died 6 DEC 1882 in Liberty Twp., Valley Co., NE, at 40 years of age.

"History of Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-1865" lists R. R. Hollowell as being commissioned as a 2LT in Company K, 28th PA Infantry on 20 July 1861.

He resigned his commission on 13 September 1863. No further information was provided.
