Does anyone know of this family?

Allan Mc Neil, Adaline Proctor-Mc Neil, and son Alan W. Mc Neil have not been found on any Canadian or US census after 1901, and none are listed in Ontario death records. Where has this family vanished to? Why is daughter Anna living with a cousin in Michigan in 1910, and why is son Hugh in an orphanage in Maine in 1910? What happened to Adaline (there's no Canadian Death Record for her)? I cannot not find Allan on the 1911 Canadian census or 1910 through 1930 US census records -- where di he go? Family history says Allan was a sea captain, and was seen alive after 1918.
