· From "The HISTORY OF DAVIS COUNTY, IOWA; Des Moines, State Historical Company, 1882", pages 680 and 681:

"BAILEY, ORANGE, farmer and stock-raiser, section 18, post-office Albany; one of the first settlers of Marion township, was born March 11, 1811, in Bradford county Pennsylvania. He was raised a farmer; when 10 years of age, came with his father, Smith Bailey, to Muskingum county, Ohio; and eight years later moved to Franklin county, Ohio where he lived seven years. He received his education in the subscription schools. He came to this county in 1845, built a log cabin and endured the many hardships a pioneer is subject to. When he arrived with a wife and four children, $150 was his entire capital, and in less than a year his wife died, leaving him the care of four small children, and a new farm to attend too. His farm now contains 110 acres, all under cultivation. He is a member of the United Brethren Church, and in politics is a republican. He was first married to Miss Lydia Wagner of Franklin county, Ohio; and they had seven children: William S., David S., Rose Mantie, Ann, and three deceased, Warren, Charley S., and Mary 0. Was married again in January 1849, to Miss Nancy Good, daughter of Isaac Good of Muskingum county, Ohio, and they have had thirteen children; Thomas J., Elizabeth, Rachel, James H., Frances M., Hiram, Emma J., Austin, and five deceased, Franklin, Ira, Peter J., and two in infancy".

Lydia Waggoner's Family History

Lydia Waggoner, first wife of Orange Bailey, was born 7 JAN 1812 possibly in OH or PA [a cousin says, "Fayette, PA"]. She died 8 AUG 1847 in Marion Twp., Davis Co., IA, at 35 years of age. She is buried in the Bailey Cemetery near Ottumwa, Iowa.

Generation 2 (parents)

The Parents of Lydia Waggoner are unknown.

Clue1:

WAGGONER, Lydia married Orange Bailey in Clinton Township, Franklin Co., OH, August 9, 1832. According to her headstone Lydia was born January 7, 1812. Lydia died August 8, 1847 in Marion Twp., Davis Co., IA, at 35 years of age.

On the 1830 Franklin Co., OH census Orange Bailey's family was in Dublin Twp. There was also a William Waggoner family in Dublin Twp. during 1830:

1830 Federal Census Index
WAGGONER, WILLIAM
Franklin County OH 018 Dublin Township
Federal Population Schedule OH 1830
OHS3a1917692

Clue2:

Maria Waggoner who was married a David Groom Oct. 5, 1837 in Franklin Co., OH. Died abt. 1846 in IA. or OH. Children were; Mary J. b. abt. 1839, Rhoda b. abt. 1842, and Smith W. b. abt. 1846. Was Maria a sister to Lydia Waggoner? If so it would explain why Orange Bailey witnessed David Groom's Will. (From: Kimmckim@aol.com)

Clue 3.

Maria and David Groom are on the 1840 census for Washington Twp; Franklin Co., OH. She is age 20-29. She also signed a Land Deed with her husband David on Jan. 21, 1839 for 19 acres in Washington Twp. sold to John Keller. Their marriage record can be seen in VOL 3; p. 176 in Franklin Co., OH. marriages.

By the CENSUS; 1850; IA; Marion Twp., Davis Co.; p. 274; David GROOM is married to Mary Ann Clayton with David's and Maria's children. (From: Kimmckim@aol.com)

Clue 4: Waggoners living in Franklin Co., OH during 1830 (just before Orange and Lydia married in 1832:

Waggoner, Abram OH FRANKLIN CO. JEFFERSON TWP 041 1830
Waggoner, George OH FRANKLIN CO. MADISON TWP 085 1830
Waggoner, Jacob OH FRANKLIN CO. PLAIN TWP 060 1830
Waggoner, Martin OH FRANKLIN CO. JEFFERSON TWP 040 1830
Waggoner, Martin OH FRANKLIN CO. JEFFERSON TWP 041 1830
Waggoner, William OH FRANKLIN CO. DUBLIN TWP 018 1830

Clue 5: Smith Bailey father of Orange was in Dublin Twp in 1830:
1830 US Census Index: Dublin, Washington Twp., Franklin Co., OH - p 12.

I'm betting William Waggoner is the father of Lydia. Remeber her first born son was named William.
